The third and final act of Tristan und Isolde, the conclusion of our three-year exploration of Richard Wagner’s operatic masterpiece, reminds us that the transformative power of love conquers all, even death. American composer Scott Joplin, the “King of Ragtime,” was among the many inspired by the opera. The overture to Joplin’s opera Treemonisha, placed in a former slave community in 1884, opens the concert after Francesco shares his thoughts about the enduring significance of Tristan und Isolde. Event Details
The Artists in Conversation Festival is an annual program that explores the future of opera and the performing arts through the lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The 2023 Artists in Conversation Festival presents live performances of two song recitals, American Patriots and She Loves You Back, exploring the theme of the 2023 season,“Climate” through a broad approach, ranging from socio-political to ecological.
Schedule of events:
Saturday, November 18 – 3:00pm She Loves You Back
Saturday, November 18 – 7:00pm American Patriots
Sunday, November 19 – 3:00pm American Patriots
Sunday, November 19 – 7:00pm She Loves You Back
She Loves You Back is a fresh and surprising collection of works exploring the role of Earth as mother – a feminine body that is exalted and exploited. What befalls a feminine body befalls the planet. The collection of staged works includes Ashi Day’s For Whom the Dog Tolls, Shruthi Rajasekar’s The Letter, Robert Schumann’s Frauenliebe und Leben, and two works by Lisa Neher: excerpts from No One Saves the Earth from Us But Us and Sonnet at the Edge of the Reef.
American Patriots, created by Samantha Rose Williams and Yaniv Segal, is a new music-theater production that explores what it means to be American from four vastly different perspectives: African-American, Native American, New American, and white Working-Class American. Songs set to the text of interviews with Americans today, take an unflinching look at the day-to-day realities of American ideals. Featuring compositions by Regina Harris Baiocchi, Gala Flagello, Danielle Jagelski, and Yaniv Segal, the four composers’ unique styles create a dynamic auditory experience that is at times classical, jazzy, broadway, funny, serious, and alarming but always engaging and unexpected. American Patriots asks audiences to actively examine the way they think about identity, unconscious bias, and who this country is for; and to foster meaningful connection with people they may not have previously identified with.

A BAROQUE REVELRY: Magic, Music, and Marvels of the 18th Century to Saturday, November 18, 2023. Join us as we once again journey back in time to experience very early Regency entertainment in the shadow of a true vintage mansion.
In the late 18th century, magicians (called conjurers then) would perform an early version of variety show with musicians, magic, opera singers, contortionist, jugglers, belly dancing and more for the elite and royals of Europe. A BAROQUE REVELRY will transport the audience back to those performances with a musical ensemble performing period music on period instruments, live singing, belly dance performances, magic and more plus dinner and drinks for purchase.
The performance will be held in the enclosed and covered garden gazebo on the grounds, while dinner and drinks will be served in the nearby tent. In addition, the mansion and garden will be open to explore and take photos before and after.

The sensational double-bassist Maggie Carter joins the PCO on works by Bruch and Bottesini. The orchestra also will perform Jessie Montgomery’s Starbust, a colorful single movement work. Concluding this program is Dvorak’s celebrated String Serenade.
17-year-old double bassist Maggie Carter is passionate about sharing the power and beauty of music with her audiences and bringing the unexplored sonority of the double bass as a solo instrument into the spotlight. She first because enamored with the double bass at the age of four, received her first instrument at age nine, and currently studies with Jordan Anderson and Braizahn Jones. Her competition successes include first prize at the 2019 International Society of Bassists 14-and-under Solo Competition, the 2020 Oregon Mozart Players Young Soloists Competition, and the 2021 Oregon ASTA Solo Competition, as well as runner-up in the 2019 and 2021 PYP Concerto Competition. Maggie was also honored to be selected as All Classical Portland’s 2022 Young Artist in Residence, a pivotal experience which allowed her to reach a wider audience and mature her artistic goals. She was the featured soloist at the Oregon Symphony’s 2023 Young People’s Concerts and also performed solo with the Portland Youth Philharmonic in spring 2023 as the winner of their 2022 Concerto Competition.

The game’s afoot! A giant is dead, and his body lies at the base of a great beanstalk. The police believe young Jack is responsible. But the boy insists that he’s innocent, and begs the help of the great detective Sherlock Holmes and his colleague, Dr. Watson. Can they untangle this magical mystery?
In this operatic mystery for all ages, Holmes turns to a magic harp for clues that come in the form of musical quotes from opera greats, all cleverly woven into the plot. This buoyant, inventive score is sure to have you on the edge of your seat.

Join the Hellenic American Cultural Center & Museum (HACCM) for a special performance, “A Concert Celebrating the Jews of Greece“, performed by the Greek Chamber Music Project (GCMP). The GCMP presents a powerful program celebrating the Sephardic Jews of Greece and the broader Mediterranean. The Sephardim have a long history in Greece, with musical traditions that are woven deep into the fabric of the region. Led by Ellie Falaris Ganelin on flute, the GCMP is pleased to collaborate with Sarah Aroeste who sings in Ladino, the Judeo-Spanish language of the Sephardim. She keeps the language alive with unique interpretations of traditional Sephardic songs and her original compositions sung in Ladino. She is joined by her longtime pianist and producer Shai Bachar. Together, the trio offers a multimedia program of old and new songs infused with Greek and Sephardic influences. Through stories and song, this concert in celebration of the Jews of Greece is meant to educate, entertain and inspire.

Hailed by The New York Times as “invariably energetic and finely burnished…playing with earthy vigor,” the Grammy Award-winning Catalyst Quartet combines a serious commitment to diversity, education, and contemporary works with virtuosic playing “reminiscent of great quartets of the past such as the Guarneri and Budapest” (Richmond Times). In this concert, Catalyst concludes their year as CMNW Artists-in-Residence with an exciting evening of Latin-inspired works by Paquito D’Rivera, Astor Piazzolla, and Maurice Ravel, along with George Gershwin’s gorgeous Lullaby.
“Some complain that classical music was written by dead white guys, is performed by white musicians, and listened to by white senior citizens. Luckily, there are groups like the Catalyst Quartet to combat this trend. They serve not only to foster performer diversity but also to promote works by non-white composers…”
