It’s probably one of the biggest words you hear nowadays: security. It comes at a premium everywhere and everyone is figuring out how to keep what is important to them safe. This is especially true in the world of computers. Finding a way to keep the information on a personal computer safe is something that computer owners, like yourself, worry about. It wouldn’t be uncommon to find a person spending over 100 dollars for top of the line security software. But even with the ever growing need for security against hackers, viruses, and identity theft, should you be paying a dime for your software?

While it would never be advisable or smart to operate your computer without any sort of protection, the same way it wouldn’t be safe to operate a kids backpack without a zipper to seal the contents, there is reason enough to think that you don’t have to break the bank to protect your computer. If you are using a company for internet access, and virtually everyone is, then you probably know these companies will give you free software and hardware virus protection. The way it usually works is you log in to their company website with a predetermined user name and password and there will be a tab on their for security. You then select the anti-virus software and it will allow you to install it and use it for as long as you are using their service. This is not the same as the virus protection they have for you online.

Companies spend millions of dollars to make sure that the Internet is secure. They will verify the quality, content, and safety of other websites and block those that are simply corrupt and will alert you to others where the content cannot be verified. It’s a necessary security measure in this day and age.

As computers continue to grow in popularity and their technology evolves to make them accessible to so many people, so does the need for enhanced security within a computer’s operating systems. Increased security makes it harder to penetrate computer systems and to lift sensitive information. It also makes it more difficult for viruses to leave their mark. There are many sophisticated antivirus software applications available that will help the user to avoid computer problems and shutdowns.

Viruses are an annoyance to deal with but seem to be in abundance almost everywhere on the Internet. Simply clicking on an unfamiliar link in an email can leave your computer ridden with a virus that can seem impossible to get rid of. With the right software installed on your computer’s operating system, you can avoid this frequently occurring problem and safeguard your computer. Antivirus software will help your computer solve several issues:

You can customize the software to detect spam emails and delete them before they even enter your hard drive. This will delete many viruses before you are even aware they were present or posed a threat.

The software can start working at startup or at a pre-set time of day. It works in the background and will give a report of detected viruses, if any, at a set time, as well.

The software allows the user freedom and flexibility in visiting sites that are new or questionable. If there is a potential virus problem with the site, the software will either block entry or give a warning before the user proceeds.

Antivirus software is a very important part of using a computer, whether it’s for personal or business matters. Contracting a computer virus can render a system completely useless until you remedy the situation, but having the software installed and properly working ensures there is no down time or shutdowns experienced.

It is hard for consumers to trust someone to take security measures for the operating system on their computer. There are so many bugs and viruses out in the cyberworld that virtually everyone with a computer has been affected by some type of destructive program at least one time in their life and that infection breeds distrust. In this day and age, people can not survive without their beloved computer. People need to network with friends and collegues on a daily basis. A large portion of the population does not leave home to go to a job every day but rather works from home on their trusty computer.

How does a person regain trust in the programs that are available to make their computer secure? Picking out the right software or person to clean up a hard drive is not as easy as picking out cell phone plans. The options available are to go to an office supply store and pick up a boxed virus-removing software package or have one of the stores technicians clean up the computer.

Software and programs designed to remove bugs from a computer hard drive are also availble on the Internet and these are what the everyday consumer distrusts the most. Viruses have been brilliantly disguised for so long that even when a company seems to have a wonderful reputation, some consumers are never really sure if everything is as it seems. Hackers have used seemingly benign emails and e-cards to make their way into innocent computers for so long, that sometimes people would rather delete emails from people they know and trust, instead of exposing their operating system and hard drive to what could be lurking in the shadows. While these fears are valid, today’s computer user must gather up a level of confidence in the makers of virus protection software.

Not many people would agree to give a stranger access to their personal information, such as their home address, job title or vacation photos. But hundreds of millions of people are giving strangers access to their lives without even knowing it.
Cyber thieves are employing social networking sites as a way to data mine, which is the process of extracting patterns from data. Users of these sites are therefore vulnerable, and thieves skilled at committing identity or credit theft could have access to their sensitive information.
Because many use social networking sites from their homes, it’s hard for them to think that they’re broadcasting information to malicious people. In fact, users of these sites often possess a false sense of anonymity. Because there’s no actual physical contact involved with the sites, users might be lured into revealing information they wouldn’t normally disclose.
Criminals can use the quizzes that are popular on social networking sites ”which are created and seen by third-party user” to extract sensitive information. While the questions in these quizzes may seem innocent, they’re often the same questions that banks or email accounts use when the user has forgotten his or her password.
Social networking sites typically warn users that a third party will have access to the quiz answers, so it’s up to the users to decide if they want to make that information public.
Social networking users are also vulnerable to malicious people who will attempt to establish an online relationship and convince a user to meet them in person. The more personal information the malicious user is privy to, the more dangerous the situation can become.
Those engaged with social networking sites should take necessary measures to stay safe. They should always remember to limit the information they give out, keeping in mind that the Internet is a public forum. Users should also make sure the privacy settings on their profiles are high, and should take the time to evaluate the privacy policies of the social networking site they’re using.

Until fairly recently, copyrights, or rights given to authors or creators, were typically regarded as a means to protect artistic works, such as books, movies or photographs. But in the digital age we’re living in, the piracy of computer software or other digital materials is also becoming a major concern, and poses problems for the government as technology continues to evolve.
In the past, software was not protected by copyrights because they weren’t seen in the same vein as creative works. But the federal government has since extended its copyright law to cover computer software, because software is now widely recognized as original works created by authors. This extension helps software companies to prevent organizations from copying the software.
The government has also moved to continue to protect digital materials; in 1998, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act was passed as a further extension of the copyright law. In effect, it outlaws circumventing anti-piracy measures included in most software and prevents the sale or distribution of anything that could be used to illegally copy software, among other measures.
But technology changes every day, and the law struggles to evolve with it. In August 2010, for instance, the Library of Congress announced changes in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act which would allow smartphone users to download applications that weren’t approved or supplied by the phone maker—a practice that has become referred to in the tech community as “jailbreaking.” This alteration of the act will also allow consumers to change take their phone from its intended carrier to another carrier, as long as the second approves of the change.
By enacting these changes, the Library of Congress is working to grow with technology, allowing consumers to access copyrighted works in lawful ways, while phone companies have asserted that application approval processes are in place to enhance the user’s experience.
